Carthage man airlifted to Kansas City hospital, passenger killed in collision on I-49

A North Carolina man was killed and a Carthage man seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision 9:55 a.m. today on southbound I-49 at the 134.6 mile marker in Bates County.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1995 Isuzu driven by Ricky N. Robertson, 31, Carthage, traveling northbound on I-49 suffered an equipment failure in the front left tire, traveled off the left side of the roadway, crossed the median and struck a southbound 2017 Kenworth driven by Timothy L. Chambers, 62, Braymer, in the driver's side of both towed units.


Bates County Coroner Greg Mullinax pronounced a passenger in the Robertson vehicle, Nicholas R. Zerpa, 39, Charlotte, North Carolina, dead at the scene at 10:15 a.m.

Robertson was taken to Bates County Memorial Hospital, then airlifted to a Kansas City hospital with serious injuries.

The fatality was the 58th this year for Highway Patrol Troop A.
