A Blue Springs man was killed in a two-vehicle accident 12:50 p.m. today on I-44, one mile east of Sarcoxie.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2016 Mercedes Benz Spinter 3500 driven by Caleb D. Brainard, 25, Blue Springs, struck the rear of a towed unit of a 2013 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by Jorge A. Lay, 52, Miami, Florida, that was stopped in traffic due to heavy congestion.
Doctor Schimmel pronounced Brainard dead at the scene at 1:30 p.m.
The fatality was the 96th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
