Spiva Art Gallery to feature mural installation

(From Southern News Service)

A special mural installation by Dave Loewenstein will be featured Tuesday, Jan. 21, through Tuesday, Feb. 18, in the Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University.

“At the End of the Day” features works by Loewenstein, a nationally recognized muralist and activist printmaker. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Center for the Study of Political Graphics in Los Angeles, Calif., and the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence, Kan. His “Butterfly Effect” mural, painted following the 2011 tornado, can be seen at the corner of 15th and Main streets in Joplin.

The painted tableaus featured in “At the End of the Day” are personal to Loewenstein.

“This site specific installation brings together ideas about my neighborhood – East Lawrence, Kan. – and how the pressures of development and popular ideas about Placemaking are changing how it is understood and who gets to live there,” he says.

An artist talk is scheduled from to 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, followed by a reception in the gallery.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Admission is free and open to the public.
