Shellie Hewitt has been named Missouri Southern State University’s new Dean of Admissions.

Hewitt, who has worked in higher education for the last 12 years, comes to Missouri Southern from the University of Central Missouri, where she has served as director of Graduate and International Student Services since 2017.

“I’m truly humbled to be joining this well-respected university and distinguished academic community,” Hewitt said. “I look forward to elevating MSSU’s deep commitments to promoting opportunities for students, serving the community and partnering with others to advance the mission and vision of the university.”

In her role as director of Graduate and International Student Services, she provided strategic direction for recruitment, admissions, enrollment, student advising, retention and immigration policy. She also co-led initiatives as the university that produced the highest retention rate in the history of the institution, redesigned communication plans to enhance outreach to prospective students, and revamped the campus visit process to help distinguish UCM from their competitors.

Prior to that, she served as assistant director of Graduate Education and Research, and assistant director of Graduate School and International Admissions at UCM, and as an adjunct faculty member since 2018.

Hewitt served as co-chair of the university’s Strategic Enrollment Management Recruitment Council, and as a member of the Missouri Graduate Deans Association, NAFSA: Association of International Educators and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

“The role played by the Dean of Admissions in development and oversight of our new student recruitment is a critical one,” said Dr. Brad Hodson, Missouri Southern’s executive vice president. “We are excited Shellie will be joining the Lion community and bringing new leadership and energy to our wonderful admissions team.”

She will begin her new role at Missouri Southern on Sept. 1.
