The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and area municipal police departments made 123 compliance checks on Halloween.
There were seven violations encountered and charged with a class A misdemeanor.
In addition, information was gathered for further investigation on three sex offenders that were no longer residing at the addresses they registered.
Officers check to verify the sex offenders are; avoiding all Halloween related contact with children, remaining inside their residence between 5 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., have a sign posted on the front of their residence that reads “No candy or treats at this residence”, and have all of their outside lighting turned off during the evening hours after 5 p.m.
The following list shows the number of checks that were done in each of the municipalities, and those that were outside city limits and inside Jasper County.
Carl Junction 4
Carterville 1
Carthage 9
Duenweg 4
Duquesne 4
Joplin 59
Oronogo 2
Sarcoxie 4
Webb City 4
JCSO 32
Total: 123 checks
We fully realize there are more sex offenders in these areas, however the constitution of the State of Missouri does not allow for laws to be made retroactive. (Meaning those on the registry before the law was enacted on Aug 28, 2008 do not apply to this statute.) Only those convicted on or after Aug. 28, 2008 are checked for Halloween violations.
