(From the Joplin Police Department)On Thursday, December 8th, 2022, Joplin Police Department Captain Trevor Duncan graduated as a member of the 284th session of the FBI National Academy. The graduation took place at the National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Nationally, fewer than one percent of officers have the opportunity to attend the program.
Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy offers ten weeks of advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training. Participants must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend.
On average, these officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions. The 284th session consisted of 237 law enforcement officers from 49 states and the District of Columbia.
The class also included members of law enforcement agencies from 25 countries, 5 military organizations, and 5 federal civilian organizations.
Captain Duncan began his law enforcement career at the Joplin Police Department in 2006 as a Police Officer and was selected to become a Detective in 2009. In 2012 he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and then to the rank of Sergeant in 2013.
As a Sergeant, he worked in Patrol, Investigations, and Internal Affairs. In 2017 he was promoted to the rank of Captain and has served over the Professional Standards Bureau, Investigations Bureau, and is currently the Captain over the Uniformed Operations Bureau.
While attending the FBI National Academy, Captain Duncan completed 5 master’s level courses through the University of Virginia Masters of Public Safety Program, which earned him a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice Education. I
n regards to Captain Duncan’s graduation, Police Chief Sloan Rowland says “The FBI National Academy is the premier school for executive-level leadership in the United States. We are extremely proud of Captain Duncan and congratulate him on his completion of this challenging course."
