Joplin animal control officer rescues skunk family from storm drain

(From the Joplin Health Department)

Just a day in the life of an Animal Control Officer (ACO) who loves baby animals.

Last night, the evening of Wednesday 6-14-23, Joplin ACO Carroll was called out to help rescue 6 juvenile skunks and their mom. They had fallen into a storm water drain.

This drain is about 5ft deep, and these beautiful creatures had no way to get back out.

Skunks have horrible eyesight and due to this, they most likely never even saw the drain opening until it was too late. Thankfully when they fell into this opening, some very concerned citizens called for help.

After ACO Carroll was able to remove the family from the storm drain, they definitely showed their appreciation of help by not spraying anyone! Mom took all her young back to their den to sleep off the excitement from the events.

So to this mom and her kits, we say “smell you later!”

  1. So, why would they shoot and kill one when you call them because it got into your trap you set to catch something else?
