Gary Headley Memorial Scholarships to be awarded at MSSU, contributions being accepted

Gary Headley, who worked at KSN/KODE in Joplin, Missouri passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on October 3, 2021. He was a photographer for these stations for 35 years and was loved by all who knew him, publicly or professionally.

In 1983, Gary enrolled at Missouri Southern State University and was granted an internship to work in several communications related programs.

Throughout his time at MSSU, Gary gained knowledge of the communications field, working at the MSSU TV station KGCS, The Chart newspaper, and other areas. He was very grateful to Missouri Southern for this opportunity and through his experience there, gained a love of photography and made that his chosen profession.

In June 2023, 40 years since Gary enrolled at MSSU, his mother Sue Headley established the Gary Headley Endowed Memorial Scholarship in his memory. This scholarship will be awarded to incoming freshmen who are majoring in Communications and have a minimum high school GPA of 2.5.

Candidates seeking the scholarship will apply by writing an essay saying why they feel they should be selected. The scholarship selection committee will select the candidate they feel is most worthy and based on need. The Gary Headley Endowed Memorial Scholarship will begin providing two $500 scholarships to students in the Fall 2023 semester.

We would like to ask those who knew and loved Gary to participate by contributing to the Gary Headley Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund. Each gift will make additional funds available for scholarships of greater amounts, could possibly provide scholarships for more student recipients, or both!

If you are interested in being part of this tribute to Gary or if you need more information, please contact Darrin Brower, Director of Development at 417-625-3577.
