The Joplin Recycling Center will join thousands of organizers holding recycling events across the country to celebrate America Recycles Day, a national initiative by Keep America Beautiful. America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States.Joplin’s event will be held on Friday, November 17 and Saturday, November 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Joplin Recycling Center, 1310 West A Street.
Joplin residents may pick up a welded-wire compost bin with instructional brochure and a sample bag of SproutFaster---all while supplies last. Master Naturalists and Master Gardeners will demonstrate and answer questions about recycling yard and kitchen waste into compost, explain how to make a dog-waste digester or set up a rain barrel, and generally help with environmental and gardening questions.
Mary Anne Phillips, Joplin Recycling Coordinator and Storm Water Education Manager said, “I am excited to offer a small bag of organic fertilizer again this year.” Organic resources are usually carbon based, thus they are not harmful to people or the environment. Conversely, chemical based fertilizers often contain petroleum, which, if applied improperly, can pollute our waterways after entering storm drains.
Phillips further said, “In keeping with the doo-doo theme, there will also be a Dog Waste Digester demonstration.” Residents will learn how to turn a plastic garbage can and lid, or five-gallon bucket and lid, into a mini septic system that is a better way to dispose of dog waste.
“America Recycles Day provides a key moment in time to regain momentum for recycling in America, and to help make recycling a daily social norm across the country,” said Brenda Pulley, senior vice president, recycling, Keep America Beautiful. “Get involved by conducting an America Recycles Day event in your hometown. Take the “#BeRecycled” Pledge and invite your friends, family and neighbors to do the same. Let’s get people recycling in every aspect of their lives – at home, at work and on the go!”
Recycling is a multi-billion-dollar industry that employs millions of Americans and helps advance our clean energy economy.
The Joplin Recycling Center accepts all traditional recyclables, as well as cooking oil, household hazardous waste, and electronics; provides free packing materials and moving boxes; and a document destruction shredder is available on a self-serve basis.
