Jasper County deputy's fatal shooting of Joplin man ruled justifiable

The Missouri Highway Patrol investigation into the shooting that involved a Jasper County Deputy that took place on 01-02-18 has been completed. 

The investigation indicates the shooting was justified. 

According to the state patrol report, Jasper County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Hutchins responded to 901 N. Landreth Avenue on 01-02-18 at approximately 3:00 PM after hearing a call from other officers requesting backup units regarding a man inside the residence with a knife. 

The report indicated that Jasper County Sheriff’s deputies with the civil process division were attempting to serve an ex parte order of protection to Louis C. Miller, 66. 

Upon contacting him at the residence he picked up a large knife. Deputies gave repeated commands for Miller to drop the knife. Miller pointed the knife in their direction and charged at them. 

Deputy Hutchins fired one shot, striking Miller in the chest. He died from the wound. 

Investigation into the shooting was immediately turned over to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Results of the investigation were turned over to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and the Jasper County Prosecutor.
