On March 17, 2018 at 9:45 pm, Crawford County Deputy Sheriffs learned of a pursuit that the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was involved in. The suspect vehicle, a 2003 Nissan Maxima driven by Chase Emmanuel Lewis was northbound on US 69 Highway toward the Crawford County line.
A Crawford County Deputy Sheriff located the vehicle at the intersection of US 69 and US 400 Highways and took over the pursuit. The pursuit continued northbound on US 69 until Lewis lost control of the vehicle and partially entered the east ditch.
Lewis re-entered the highway and drove southbound on US 69 turning west onto US 400. The pursuit entered the Cherokee, KS city limits on US 400. Tire deflation devices were deployed by another Crawford County Deputy Sheriff near the east city limit. Lewis struck the devices and was able to turn north on K 7 Highway, stopping the vehicle ½ block north of US 400.
Deputy Sheriffs reported that an unidentified male subject exited the rear passenger door and fled on foot. Lewis and a juvenile female exited the front driver and passenger-side doors and surrendered to authorities.
A search of the area was conducted by law enforcement for the subject who fled on foot. He was not located. Lewis and the juvenile were both taken into custody and transported to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office. Lewis is being held on 3,000 bond. The juvenile was released to the custody of juvenile authorities.
This incident remains under investigation by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
