Empire District Electric files request for increase in fuel adjustment charge, customers to see rate increase

(From the Public Service Commission)

The Empire District Electric Company (Empire) has filed a request with the Missouri Public Service Commission to adjust the fuel adjustment charge (FAC) on the bills of its electric customers.

Empire has made two filings. In its first filing (Case No. ER-2018-0270), Empire proposes to adjust the FAC to reflect fuel and purchased power costs for the six month period of September 2017 through February 2018. The second case is Empire’s true-up filing (Case No. EO-2018-0271).

For a residential customer using 1,000 kWh (1,000 kilowatt-hours) of electricity a month, Empire states these two filings will result in the FAC increasing by approximately $5.74 a month. The proposed change would take effect on June 1, 2018.

Applications to intervene and participate in these cases must be filed no later than April 16, 2018, with the Secretary of the Missouri Public Service Commission, P.O. Box 360, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102-0360, or by using the Commission’s Electronic Filing and Information System (EFIS) atwww.psc.mo.gov .

Individual citizens wishing to comment should contact either the Office of the Public Counsel (Governor Office Building, 200 Madison Street, Suite 650, P.O. Box 2230, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102-2230, telephone (866) 922-2959, email opcservice@ded.mo.gov) or the Public Service Commission Staff (P.O. Box 360, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102, telephone 1-800-392-4211, email pscinfo@psc.mo.gov). The Office of the Public Counsel is a separate state agency that represents the general public in matters before the Commission.

The Empire District Electric Company serves approximately 151,700 electric customers in the Missouri counties of Barry, Barton, Cedar, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Greene, Hickory, Jasper, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, Polk, St. Clair, Stone and Taney.

  1. Totally disagree with more increases.Im on disability but husband works pays child support. We are new home owners. We can't afford our electric bill as it is.We had to get assistance with our bill and still are behind. We will get behind this summer to because i have a chronic illness to where i have to stay cool or i will feel like my skin is burning. So we keep air on 65.Have to. Increases is not good for people like us.

  2. Since the tornado in 2011 , Empire has asked for increases every 6 months for one reason or another .We "the consumers " do not get increases in our pay or standard of living costs or fuel costs .Consumers cannot afford electric bills as it is .Empire does not deserve any more from us .

  3. Oh sure Empire a mere 5.75 a month you say!!!! Why can't you leave well enough alone!! Thats about as close to 70.00 a year as you can get. Small change to you! How bout senior citizens on fixed income who get no raises!! Nothing can be done because we have to have electricity to live day to day so just twist the knife a little more!!

  5. My daughter moved from one house because of high ceilings. The smaller house still costs her dearly. Her bill is outrageous and she is very conservative with useage. Also they read meters wrong and don't refund errors, even when they say they will. Also they don't allow solar in. Extreme makeover house done with solar power was never allowed, penalized, not lowered.

  7. Empire wants us to pay for their wind farms 7.3billion plus pay for them to dismantle the Asbury plant a couple of million that we're still paying for the improvements to make it run efficient. (Changed from coal to gas). And personally, I think their increasing the rates to subsidise their loss to solar customers. If you want to make a difference call the office of publuc counsel, and even join me in picketing Empire

  8. If you want to avoid the constant price hikes from the electric company maybe its time for a change. Owning your own source of power is the key don't use their power create your own via solar If anyone wants to go solar with no money down & start paying less day 1 call me at 417-396-2736 for a free solar consultation.
