(From the City of Joplin)
In recognition of Arbor Day, the City of Joplin will join Liberty Utilities – Empire and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) in recognizing the benefits trees provide our community with a short program at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 28 at the Empire Market, 931 East 4th Street in Joplin, Missouri. This is the opening day for Downtown Joplin’s Empire Market.
Members of the City’s Tree Advisory Board will also be present to recognize the importance of trees in our yards, community, and world as they celebrate Arbor Day. Joplin Mayor Gary Shaw will present a Proclamation naming April 28, 2018 as Arbor Day for the City of Joplin.
The event will also celebrate Joplin’s recognition as a Tree City USA., a designation received annually since Arbor Day 2009. To become a Tree City USA, cities must initiate standards that address management and care of public trees, commit to a community forestry program and participate in an event to provide education about proper tree care.
Seedlings will be available at the “Ask the Arborist” booth following the program through 3 p.m., or while supplies last. A representative of MDC and Liberty foresters will be available to provide information about the importance of planting the right tree in the right place.
