Newton County Sheriff's Office warns of scam

(From the Newton County Sheriff's Office)

SCAM ALERT

You receive a phone call from a semi-official sounding voice that present themselves as a police officer. They tell you that you have a warrant.

In order to clear the warrant, you must go to a store and buy a card and load it with hundreds of dollars. Then you must call the “officer” back and provide them with numbers off the back of the card.

Just like that you have been scammed and getting the money back is extremely difficult.

Please understand, this is not a legitimate practice in law enforcement or the court system.

If you are wanted, we come to you. We typically won’t call you. We don’t take money over the phone.

If you have doubts about the legitimacy of a person presenting themselves as police, trust your gut and ask for more information. Verify their employment. Don’t send $1000 to them and then try to find out if they are legit. By then it is too late.
