Baxter Springs Police Department warns of Facebook scam

(From the Baxter Springs Police Department)

We were alerted that there is an ad for a house rental going around. the ad has you enter your zip code and then it tells you if any houses are available in your area to rent.

Our reporting victim was scammed out of over $700+ dollars and was strung along for weeks by the scammer being promised a house to rent that didn't exist.

Do your research before trying to rent a house / apartment.

* Drive by it (does the address exist, are the pictures from the person current ones)

* Meet the person you're talking to.

* Never pay for anything in gift cards

* Never give out your personal information to someone who you haven't confirmed the identity of. (Name, address, social security number, DL number, bank account information, PayPal login)

Some agents will have you pay upfront for your background check, however they will never have you pay the full amount for an apartment/ house rental just to secure your spot with them. Even if you're paying for a background check you should still confirm the identity of the person and meet them in person.

*Fake profiles are everywhere

* Slow down, look at the photos see if they match any areas you know around your town.

*Typing errors

* Story isn't lining up.

* Too good to be true deal.

Please tell your loved ones don't fall victim to gift card scams.
