North Heights Porchfest topic on next Newsmakers program

(From KGCS)

There will be music in the air October 7 from noon to 7:00 p.m. as the North Heights neighborhood in Joplin hosts another Porchfest. Details of the event are being shared on this week’s Newsmakers program.

Porchfest Coordinator Justin Gill explains how the music, art and food event started and shares details of a map for visitors to find where bands are playing. Forty-seven bands or solo musical artists will perform throughout the day on a variety of porches and lawns in the area of E Street and Byers Avenue. Food trucks will attend along with homemade art and craft artists.

Caleb Miller with the band Vagabond Grove shares the benefits of the event for musicians and brings his guitar for an impromptu performance. Homeowner Steve Brunson talks about his experience hosting bands on his porch and how the event is good for the neighborhood. T-shirt sales from the otherwise free event have supported improvements such as sidewalk and curb repairs.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 and 9 p.m. the week of October 1 on KGCS-TV and will be broadcast at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, October 7, on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
