Galena man jailed on domestic abuse, kidnapping allegations

(From the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office)

Just before 4:00 pm on Thursday, October 3, 2024, Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance outside of Baxter Springs.

Upon their arrival, deputies learned the alleged disturbance between 27-year-old Justin Brown, of Galena and his girlfriend, started as a verbal argument as they were traveling down the roadway. When the vehicle stopped, the female exited the vehicle and began walking. Brown reportedly chased the female down nearly striking her before exiting the vehicle and engaging in a physical altercation. Brown is then suspected of forcing the woman back into the vehicle and attempting to drive off.

Brown was taken into custody and transported to the Cherokee County Jail on allegations of Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Assault, Domestic Battery and Disorderly Conduct.

As October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office wants to remind the community that domestic violence can and does occur at all times of day, in all types of neighborhoods and involves all types of people, without regard to social or economic status.

It's important for those who are in abusive relationships to know they are not alone. In fact, although considerable progress has been made in reducing domestic violence over the years, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men have been severely physically abused by an intimate partner. Just as important is knowing there is help and resources available to assist in getting out of a physically or emotionally abusive situation.
