St. Louis-based artist Tom Huck will offer a talk and demonstration of the rebellious tradition of printmaking during a visit to the Missouri Southern campus on Sept. 14-15.
Huck’s prints are heir to a long tradition in printmaking of representing the grotesque in a manner that is both provocative and darkly comical. His exhibition focuses around the presentation of the artist’s woodblock prints, which are influenced by such artists as Durer, Burgkmair, Hogarth and Posada.
He will present an Artist Talk from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, in Spiva Art Gallery. It will be followed by a reception from 3 to 5 p.m.
Huck will offer a demonstration of his work from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Focal Point Gallery, 521 Main St., during Third Thursday.
The events are free and open to the public.
Missouri Southern will sponsor the Third Thursday event in downtown Joplin. The event will include more than 50 tables and activities from academic departments and campus groups, as well as free children’s inflatables, music performances, games and more.
Other activities will include Southern Theatre’s presentation of “Blithe Spirit,” comedian Samuel J. Comroe and screenings of “The Legend of Tarzan.”

“Brief Encounter”: 7 p.m. in Plater Hall’s Cornell Auditorium. The 1945 film directed by David Lean is presented as part of the British Film Festival.
Samuel J. Comroe: 7 p.m. in Corley Auditorium. The stand-up comedian has been featured on TBS’ “Conan” and BET’s “Real Husbands of Hollywood.”

“Charles Darwin: The Man Behind the Science”: 11 a.m. in Corley Auditorium. Dr. Vickie Roettger will offer a multimedia presentation that uses the diaries and letters of his wife, Emma (Wedgewood) Darwin, to discuss Charles Darwin’s life.
“The Legend of Tarzan”: 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. in Billingsly Student Center’s Phelps Theatre. The 2016 film stars Margot Robbie and Alexander Skarsgard. Free and open to the campus community.

“Another Irrelevant Dead White Male? The Case for Winston Churchill’s Relevance in 2016”: 10 a.m. in Corley Auditorium. Dr. Jim Williams, former director of the National Churchill Museum in Fulton, Mo., will discuss why students can still look to Churchill for relevant life lessons.
“The London Blitz in 1940: The Midwestern Connection”: 11 a.m. in Corley Auditorium. Williams will discuss Americans who volunteered to fly in the Royal Air Force as well as others who had connections to the war in Europe and Asia.
“The Improbably True Story of Missouri’s Churchill Museum”: 1 p.m. in Corley Auditorium. Williams will share the chain of events that led to Winston Churchill delivering one of his finest speeches at Westminster College and the establishment of a memorial and library in his honor.
“Starting a Small Business: The First Steps”: 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Room 108 of Plaster Hall. Participants can assess their business idea, learn legal and regulatory requirements, and identify sources of funding. Cost is $29 per business.
