A walk down memory lane will be offered as students of the former Joplin Junior College gather for a first-ever reunion set for Friday, March 31.
Doors will open at 4 p.m. at the Joplin Schools Administration building/Memorial Education Center, located at 310 W. Eighth St. Parking will be available on the west side of Pearl Ave. Those attending are invited to look around the building, where several points of interest will be marked.
At 4:30 p.m., director of the Joplin Museum Complex Brad Belk will offer a historic presentation about Joplin Junior College.
The reunion will continue with a reception starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 505 Byers Ave. Dinner and a special program will be offered starting at 6:30 p.m. It will include remarks from Dr. Alan Marble, president of Missouri Southern; Dr. Brad Hodson, executive vice president; and a video presentation on the college’s history.
Initially housed in 1937 within Joplin High School – now the administration building – the junior college found a new home at Fourth Street and Byers Avenue in 1938. It would later move back to its original building when a new JHS was constructed. The college remained at that location until transitioning into a four-year school in 1967 at the former Mission Hills estate.
“Our history as an institute of higher education is rooted in Joplin Junior College,” said Marble. “This reunion is an opportunity for us to celebrate the students who attended JJC and who helped establish so much of what we hold dear today at Missouri Southern State University.”
