Off-duty JPD officer's recognition of suspects leads to four arrests, seizure of heroin, meth, weapon

On August 11, 2018 at 8:27 p.m. a Joplin police officer was off duty and at Sonic at 3333 South Range Line and recognized a wanted male who had two felony arrest warrants. He contacted an on-duty officer who responded. In the meantime, the wanted male walked to the Fairfield Inn and met a female and the two began acting suspiciously.

The officer arrived and contacted the wanted male and a female. The male was arrested for his outstanding warrants and was found to be in possession of over 100 grams of meth and approximately 4 grams of heroin. The female was found to be in possession of over 30 grams of meth. The male was identified as Aaron S. Sutten, 33, Webb City, and the female was Shawna M. Smith, 26, Joplin.

As those arrests were occurring, another officer attempted to contact two additional males who were involved with those two.

The two males had walked back down to Sonic at 3333 South Range Line. When an officer pulled up, one of those males fled south on foot to the Conoco Gas Station at 3347 South Range Line. 

The male ran into the bathroom before surrendering. Officers recovered a loaded handgun he discarded in the toilet that was reported stolen out of the City of Joplin. The male was also a convicted felon. He was identified as Joseph W. Hood, 35, Joplin (top photo)

Based on those events, officers then obtained a search warrant for a hotel room at the Fairfield Inn. The search warrant was conducted, and one female was located in the room with approximately 151 grams of meth. She was identified as Kiley R. McDonald, 28, Joplin (second photo from top). Charges were filed and approximately 286 grams of meth total were seized along with the heroin.
