Classes canceled at Neosho Benton Elementary after death of teacher performing crossing duty

We are sorry to report this news but due to the tragic loss of a Benton Elementary teacher this afternoon, school will be cancelled for Benton Elementary students and staff for the remainder of the week.

Counselors will be available for Benton families tomorrow and Friday at the Neosho Civic Center starting at 9:00 a.m. We will also have counselors available for any students or team members in need at our other school locations.

Our hearts go out to our Wildcat Family tonight.

Previous news release

A Neosho teacher passed away on Wednesday afternoon from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident while performing crossing duty at Benton Elementary.

According to Neosho police, the accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. and details are still under investigation.

The name of the teacher is not being released at this time.


"This is a very tragic accident," said Dr. Jim Cummins, superintendent of Neosho School District. "I think we are all in a state of shock and want to make sure we do everything we can to support our team and students in this difficult time."

Counselors will be available for students and NSD team members.

A press conference will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning at the Neosho School District administrative center, 418 Fairground Road, Neosho, MO 64850.
