Phone scam targeting Lamar, Milford residents

(From the Barton County Sheriff's Office)

The Barton County Sheriff’s Office is aware of a current on-going phone scam where the caller identifies with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The caller tells the call-taker there is an outstanding balance due on their taxes and that balance needs paid or the local law enforcement will be dispatched to arrest the call-taker. The caller even provides a number to call back with a form of payment.

The calls are coming in showing a number, commonly from Florida, and the call back number shows to be an Arizona number, These numbers are computer generated.

The Barton County Sheriff’s Office advises NOT to provide the caller with any information. These calls have been investigated, and while there are no course of action against the callers at this time, we have the information. We advise you can disconnect these calls, block the numbers from your phone, or contact your service provider to block these numbers.

Any legitimate attempts to collect a balance for the IRS would be conducted by mail or in person with official credentials. No one is ever advised by phone from this agency that an officer will be coming to arrest them.

We have received numerous calls from individuals getting these calls outside of Lamar, and also in the Milford areas
