Southern Media Showcase scheduled for Thursday

(From Southern News Service)

The 23rd annual Southern Media Showcase will be held Thursday, Dec. 5, on the campus of Missouri Southern State University. Close to 300 regional high school students from schools in the Joplin and Springfield areas, as well as Southeast Kansas, will gather from 9 a.m. to noon inside Corley Auditorium in Webster Hall.

Southern Media Showcase involves a competition in print and video work. The program includes video highlights of the finalists’ work and an awards presentation, with winners receiving medals.

Guest speakers this year represent various opportunities in media. Emily Younker, managing editor of The Joplin Globe, Sam McDonald, a corporate media producer and Danny Craven, a creative services director, will speak at the beginning of the day.

“We feel that it’s great to give students the opportunity to hear from media professionals as they consider options for their future,” said Judy Stiles, KGCS-TV general manager. “This ties in nicely with recognizing the students for the media work they are already doing.”

Southern Media Showcase is sponsored by the Department of Communication at MSSU, with faculty, staff and students from the campus newspaper and television and radio stations working together on the event.

Supporters are the Ruth I. Kolpin Foundation, the Missouri Broadcasters Association, the Missouri Press Association, the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, KOAM-TV and the Southern admissions office.
