According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2015 Honda Civic driven by Gerber J. Ochoa, 21, Carthage, traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.
A passenger, Stephanie Torres, 23, Carthage, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:03 a.m. by Dr. Roberto Moran.
Ochoa was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.
The fatality was the 14th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
