Stormwater work to close 4th Street at Porter Avenue for a month

(From the City of Joplin)

Starting Monday, August 17, 4th Street will close between Porter Avenue and Empire Avenue for a stormwater project in the area. The closure will be for four weeks, weather permitting.

Crews will be replacing the Porter culvert just south of 4th Street and running under this roadway to the north.

During a rain event in 2019, the existing corrugated metal pipe arch was heavily damaged and will be replaced with a reinforced concrete box culvert.

Message boards alerting traffic to this upcoming closure are in place. During the closure, east and westbound traffic will be detoured to 2nd Street. During the Labor Day weekend, 4th Street will reopen starting at 5 p.m. Friday, September 4 through 5 a.m. Tuesday, September 8, at which time work will continue on the project.

Drivers are encouraged to observe traffic signage regarding detours and be cautious while traveling in the area. Residents will have access to their property during this time. Businesses in the area will remain open and accessible during normal operation hours during the project. Drivers may want to choose alternative routes due to possible delays.
