Carthage man arrested after driving into Barton County Sheriff's vehicle in stolen car

On May 5th, 2021 at approximately 1424 hrs Deputies were dispatched to the address of 57 SE 1st Ln Lamar, Mo (The Quilt Shop) for a report of suspicious activity. 

Workers had stated a male subject had entered the store wearing a mask and gloves acting suspicious.







 
A deputy arrived on scene and located the vehicle the suspect was reported to be driving. The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in the parking lot. When the deputy approached the vehicle the male driver refused to roll his window down and was attempting to drive away. 

Sheriff Simpson placed his vehicle in front of the suspects to prevent a pursuit from occurring and risking citizens' lives. The suspect still attempted to put the vehicle in drive to get away ultimately rolling in to the Sheriff's patrol car. 








The deputy on scene deployed his baton and broke the driver side window in an attempt to remove the suspect from the vehicle. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but quickly realized he had nowhere to go. 

The suspect was taken in to custody at that time. The suspect was identified as Jesse Matheny of Carthage, MO. It was later learned the vehicle he was Driving was stolen from Pittsburg, KS. an hour before.
 
Jesse Matheny is currently being held on a capias warrant for the following charges:
 
1. Tampering W/ Motor Vehicle 1st Felony D
2. Assault 1st or Attempt- Special Victim Felony A
3.Resisting W/ Arrest Misdemeanor A
