Veterans Day activities among events set for next week at Missouri Southern

A variety of themed days and an annual ceremony will be offered during Veterans Week at Missouri Southern State University.

Monday, Nov. 8, will be Military Hat Day, in which the campus community is invited to war a hat from any branch of the military. Tuesday will be Patriotic Spirit Day, for wearing red, white and blue or camouflage colors. Yellow Ribbon Day will be on Wednesday, with everyone encouraged to wear a yellow ribbon in support of those serving in the military.






 

The annual Veterans Day ceremony is set for 12 p.m. Thursday in Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom. Dr. Dean Van Galen, president of Missouri Southern, will offer opening remarks. The guest speaker for this year’s event is Charlie Davis, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and former state representative who served for six years as chairman of Missouri’s House Veterans Committee.

The theme for Friday will be Thank a Veteran Day, with people encouraged to share a story about your favorite veteran on social media.

“The schedule of activities during Veterans Week is a way for the campus community to show our support for veterans,” said Maghan Alberts, veteran services coordinator at Missouri Southern. “We want to thank veterans for their service and bring awareness to the importance of Veterans Day.

Other activities include an ongoing photography exhibit, Japan Semester events and a reading by author Andrew Geyer.








Monday, Nov. 8


“Point and Periphery: Photographs from Small Missouri Towns”: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Spiva Gallery. The exhibit, which runs through Nov. 19, documents the landscapes of small Missouri towns and those who live there.

Tuesday, Nov. 9


“We are Little Zombies”: 7 p.m., Bookhouse Cinema, 715 E. Broadway. Having lost their parents, four young orphans salvage the items they need to start a rock band an conquer the world in this 2019 film.

Thursday, Nov. 11


“They Called Us Enemy”: 5:30 p.m., Spiva Library, Room 413A. Sigma Tau Delta will lead the discussion of the Japan Semester Book Club selection. The graphic memoir by George Takei tells the story of his experiences in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II.

Author Andrew Geyer: 6 p.m., Plaster Hall’s Cornell Auditorium. Geyer’s reading will be presented by the Honors and Global Leaders programs. Is latest book is “Lesser Mountains,” which won a 2020 Independent Publisher Book Award and was a finalist in the 2019 American Book Fest Best Book Awards.

Friday, Nov. 12

Volleyball vs. Nebraska-Kearney: 6 p.m., Young Gymnasium.

Saturday, Nov. 13

Volleyball vs. Fort Hays State: 3 p.m., Young Gymnasium.

Sunday, Nov. 14

Omicron Delta Kappa initiation and reception: 3 p.m., BSC’s Connor Ballroom. Thirty-three students and five members of the faculty and staff will be inducted into the Golden Crest Circle, the Missouri Southern chapter of the National Leadership Honor Society.
