Joplin Police Department observes 150th anniversary

 (From the Joplin Police Department)

The City of Joplin was officially chartered on March 23rd, 1873, with the merger of the towns of Murphysburg and Joplin.

With this newly chartered city came the creation of a new police force; the Joplin Police Department. In 2023 our agency, and city as a whole, reached our 150-year anniversary. This is also known as the Sesquicentennial Anniversary. This is an important point of history for our agency and our community.

To commemorate this milestone, Chief Sloan Rowland has approved a 150-Year Anniversary Badge for the Joplin Police Department.

A police officer's badge is one of the most recognized symbols of policing and law enforcement around the world and signifies the concepts of service, authority, and sacrifice.

With the authorization of the 150-year anniversary badge, officers were given the option to acquire an anniversary badge and may display it during their tour of duty in lieu of the standa

rd issue Joplin Police Department badge for the remainder of 2023.

We proudly display this symbol of achievement and look forward to continuing another 150 years of excellence in policing and community partnership.
