(From KGCS)Eleven thousand adults in Jasper and Newton counties have low literacy levels. NALA Adult Literacy is a non-profit organization working to change that and is the focus of this week’s Newsmakers program on KGCS-TV.
NALA Literacy Liftoff is taking place at the Missouri Southern State University soccer fields on Friday, September 15th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. NALA Board Member Stephanie Goad shares details of the awareness event that features tethered hot air balloon rides, food truck vendors, gift basket raffles and information tables from NALA adult literacy, Joplin Public Library, Joplin Adult Education and Parents as Teachers.
Board Member and volunteer tutor Juliette Turner shares her experiences working with clients and explains how others can help. English as a Second Language students and their teacher, Mary Gaarder, discuss the benefits of the classes in a video story.
Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 and 9 p.m. the week of September 3 on KGCS-TV and will be broadcast at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, September 9, on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.
KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
