(From KGCS)Some of Joplin’s most iconic historic structures can all be traced back to one person – architect Austin Allen. The Newman Building which is the current Joplin City Hall, St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, the United Hebrew Congregation Temple, Old Elk’s Club and many more will be featured in a tour offered by Historic Murphysburg Preservation. The group shares details of the big event happening December 3 on this week’s Newsmakers.
Mary Anne Phillips and Paula Callihan with Historic Murphysburg Preservation talk about the event, Austin Allen: The Architect Remembered which will raise funds for the group.
Austin Allen was an architect who designed both public buildings and private homes between 1890 and 1917. Those also include the current Joplin Schools Administrative Building which was the original Joplin High School and once home to Joplin Junior College, the precursor of Missouri Southern. MSSU Community Historian Brad Belk will deliver the event lecture there at tour headquarters.
This Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of November 19 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, November 25 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.
