(From the City of Joplin)
The City of Joplin’s Independence Day Celebration will be held on Friday, July 3 at the Joplin Athletic Complex, 3010 West 1st Street.
Joplin Parks and Recreation officials said this year’s event will focus on the fireworks show scheduled for 9:30 p.m.. It will last approximately 10 to 15 minutes, as in most recent years. Various sites at the complex will be open for viewing areas, including Wendell Redden Stadium, Gene Bassman Softball Complex, and Schifferdecker Park.
Concessions will be open at both the stadium and softball complex viewing areas. These snack stands offer hamburgers, hotdogs, nachos, pizza, pretzels, ice cream, slushies, candy, popcorn, pop and water. Face Painting will be available from 6:30 p.m. until dark. The Parks and Recreation Department will also have various inflatables for children to enjoy while waiting for the fireworks show.
Families who enjoy swimming are invited to attend Schifferdecker Pool’s Family Swim event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with half price admissions. In addition, Schifferdecker Park provides a great venue for picnics, as well as a viewing site of the fireworks.
Parking for the fireworks show will be available at the Athletic Complex. Due to the anticipated crowd size, the public is encouraged to arrive early for most efficient travel. Access to the Athletic Complex will be available from Tri State Road off of West 7th Street; 1st Street off of North Schifferdecker, and “B” Street off of Schifferdecker. Exits from the complex will be along these same routes.
For those who are interested in sports, the Joplin Demize Soccer will host Wichita on Friday, July 3. The game starts at 7:15 p.m.
The public is reminded to not bring personal fireworks, grills or create any fires, in order to keep the park as safe as possible for everyone to enjoy. Additionally, alcohol is not allowed on parks property.
