Seats still available in Joplin Citizens Academy

(From the City of Joplin)

Seats are still available for citizens interesting in joining others in their community to learn about their municipal government during the upcoming Citizens Academy this spring.

Starting March 1, the 11-week course offers Joplin residents, business owners and people who work in Joplin the opportunity to interact with local officials, tour City facilities and learn how to get more involved in the community. Participants will meet every department head and get an overview of the services and programs offered in each department.

Interested individuals can apply online at http://joplinmo.org/citizenapp or can pick up a form at the Information Desk in the main lobby of City Hall, 602 South Main Street. Applicants must be 18 years old or older. Both residents and non-residents are welcome to attend, however preference will be given to Joplin residents. There are still openings for the class that holds a maximum of 25 people. Applications are due by February 5.

Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., beginning March 1 until May 10. Applicants should be able to attend at least 9 of the 11 classes. The Citizens Academy is a free program. Classes will generally be held at City Hall. Some classes will include tours of other City facilities, with the City providing transportation to the tours.

This is the second Citizens Academy hosted by the City of Joplin. The first session was held in the fall of 2015, and received positive reviews from participants.
