Wearing a baseball cap is the norm for the players of the Joplin Blasters, an independent pro baseball team, however teammates could have worn a firefighter’s helmet recently when they helped a lone firefighter at a house fire in Holton, Kansas.
According to Joplin CEO and manager Gabe Suarez, the players were headed to Wichita and noticed a house fire when the team bus pulled over for a food and bathroom break. Team members were curious and went to the fire where they found a lone firefighter at the scene. Players immediately began helping him by unraveling the hose and helping to attach it to the fire hydrant until other public safety officials could arrive.
To recognize their response to a dangerous situation, Joplin Fire Chief Jim Furgerson will present the Blasters with a signed helmet from the Joplin Fire Department during pre-game ceremonies at Friday, July 29 game. The presentation will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Joe Becker Stadium. Furgerson will also give the Blasters a certificate declaring them as 2016 Honorary Firefighters.
“Fires are very dangerous,” said Furgerson. “The Blasters deserve this honor for their quick response in helping during this situation, and assisting the firefighter until more help arrived.”
