Lightning causes structure fire at 715 S. Kentucky

The Joplin Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 715 S Kentucky at 1:25 AM Friday, 08 July. 

Crews arrived on scene at 1:26 AM to nothing showing. Upon investigation, it was discovered that lightning had struck a tree which had fallen into power lines, energizing a fence as well as two houses – 715 S Kentucky and 721 S Kentucky. Crews waited for Empire District to arrive and de-energize the line. They then found small fires in both structures, caused by the electrical surge. All fires were extinguished.
 
Crews remained on scene until 3:50 AM.

No injuries were reported to either fire personnel or bystanders. 6 Joplin Fire units and 22 Joplin Fire personnel responded, as well as JPD and METS.

The cause of the fire was ruled electrical, caused by a lightning strike.
