A glass will be raised to the British pub and Scottish national identity during two Great Britain Semester presentation on Friday, Sept. 9, at Missouri Southern State University
Dr. David W. Gutzke, a professor of modern British history at Missouri State University, will present “Reports of My Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated: The Survival of the British Pub” at 9 a.m. in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium. He will discuss how the traditional pub is undergoing a metamorphosis, leading to the creation of newer types of drinking establishments.
At noon, Gutzke will offer “Mud Sweat and Beers: Soccer, Beer and National Identity in Scotland.” He will examine how masculinity, drinking in pubs and football have become a revered trinity in Scotland.
Both presentations are free and open to the public.
Other activities planned for the week include screenings of Pixar’s “Finding Dory” and the home football opener.
Monday, Sept. 5
Campus closed for Labor Day.
Tuesday, Sept. 6
“Hope and Glory”: 7 p.m., Plaster Hall’s Cornell Auditorium. Presented as part of the British Film Festival.
Wednesday, Sept. 7
A.L.I.C.E. intruder training: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (every hour on the hour) in Billingsly Student Center’s Phelps Theatre. Faculty and staff have been invited to join students in learning the Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate active shooter response training sessions.
Stuff a Hero Lion: 10:30 a.m., Billingsly Student Center. In recognition of the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, students can stuff a lion in either a police officer or firefighter theme.
Thursday, Sept. 8
A.L.I.C.E. intruder training: 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m., and again at 1 p.m., Phelps Theatre.
“Finding Dory”: 2:30 and 6:30 p.m., Phelps Theatre. Free and open to the campus community.
Friday, Sept. 9
“Reports of My Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated: The Survival of the British Pub”: 9 a.m., Corley Auditorium in Webster Hall.
“Mud, Sweat and Beer: Soccer, Beer and National Identity in Scotland”: Noon, Corley Auditorium.
“Finding Dory”: 6:30 p.m., Corley Auditorium.
Saturday, Sept. 10
Free hot dogs: 4:30 to 6 p.m., Fred G. Hughes Stadium. Come out and enjoy a hot dog before the game.
Running of the Freshmen: 5:30 p.m., Fred G. Hughes Stadium. In what has become an annual tradition, freshman will run from the south end zone to the north in a chance to win prizes.
Lions vs. Missouri Western: 6 p.m., Fred G. Hughes Stadium. The game is the home opener for the Lions.
