Highway Commission approves replacement of two bridges on 96 in Carthage

(From MODOT)

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved a contract at its monthly meeting today to replace two bridges on Missouri Route 96 in Carthage, including the closed Missouri and Northern Arkansas bridge, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

The bridge over the railroad tracks, built in 1934, was closed Sept. 1, 2016 when inspection of the bridge revealed additional deterioration.

The contract also covers the Spring River Overflow bridge.

The contractor is expected to begin work sometime this spring. The contract requires both bridges be opened to traffic no later than Sept. 15, 2017, with remaining work to be completed by Oct. 15, 2017.

There are incentives in the contract rewarding the contractor for opening the bridges earlier than the Sept. 15 deadline.

A public meeting was held last July outlining plans to replace the bridges. Another meeting will be held at a later date to outline the construction schedule.

Weather and/or construction delays will alter the work schedule.

Project background:
Prime contractor: Clarkson Construction Co., Kansas City
Completion date: October 15, 2017 (bridges open to traffic no later than Sept. 15)
Total cost: $6.2 million
