Police: Joplin man attempted sexual assaults at two businesses

On Monday January 2nd 2017 at 6:25 p.m. officers with the Joplin Police Department responded to a business on the east side of town in reference to an attempted sexual assault. After contact with a store employee officers learned that a male had come into the store and requested assistance in the restroom with an equipment issue. Once getting the female employee into the restroom the male suspect attempted to sexually assault the employee. The suspect was gone at the time of police arrival.

At 9:08p.m. a second call was received from another business on the east side of town, where the suspect using the same techniques, attempted to assault another female employee. The employee was able to avoid the suspect, who fled from the store.

An officer in the area of 4th and St. Louis observed a male, matching the description provided by the victims enter the Kum and Go Store. The male, Lawrence E. Johnson 36 of Joplin was arrested on an unrelated warrant out of Joplin and transported to the Joplin City Jail.

At the conclusion of the investigation Johnson was arrested for Felonious Restraint, Sexual Assault, and receiving stolen property. 

No injuries were reported by either victim.
Locations of the events are not released due to the nature of the criminal activity.
