The City of Joplin’s 144th birthday will be celebrated on Thursday, March 23 in recognition of the first strike of lead in this area. After the first mining strike in August 1870, Joplin was incorporated on March 23, 1873. The birthday celebration will be held at 2 p.m. in the south shelter of Landreth Park on March 23.
The history and preservation of Joplin will be highlighted by speakers Brad Belk, Director of the Joplin Museum, and Nancy Morton, Chairperson of the Joplin Historic Preservation Commission. The program also includes a performance by FOG (Four Old Guys) of the TriStatesmen Barbershop Chorus.
The public is invited to come, sign Joplin's birthday card and enjoy some light refreshments in honor of their city.
This event is hosted by the City of Joplin, Joplin Historical & Mineral Museums, Inc., Joplin Historical Society, and the Joplin Historic Preservation Commission. If bad weather is affecting the area, this event will be moved to the Main Lobby of Joplin City Hall, 602 S. Main St. The relocation will be announced through the news media and the City’s website and social media sites.
