MSSU students honored by Missouri Broadcasters Association

(From Southern News Service)

Two students in the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University have been awarded scholarships from the Missouri Broadcasters Association – seniors Zach Dobbs (Webb City) and Ashlea Zumwalt (Joplin).

The awards, recently announced during the annual MBA convention, are designed to provide support to deserving students to attain the training and expertise required to become valuable employees in Missouri’s broadcasting industry.

Students apply for the scholarship through local stations. The application includes writing an essay discussing activities and interests in broadcasting and future goals. Missouri Southern’s KGCS-TV and KXMS Radio submitted the nominations for the students.

“Both Zach and Ashlea have been valuable and active students in broadcasting while students,” said Judy Stiles, KGCS General Manager. “We are proud that they have received this statewide recognition.”

Speaking of recognition, the latest edition of “Newsmakers” on KGCS-TV features two individuals who are a part of MSSU’s history - Barbara Bevins, the first student to walk across the stage to receive a bachelor’s degree from Missouri Southern in 1969, and Dr. Conrad Gubera, longtime sociology professor who also served as Bevins’ advisor. Both spoke during MSSU’s 72nd Commencement ceremony in May.

The program will air at 5:30 p.m. the week of June 16 on KGCS-TV, Saturday morning at 5:30 a.m. on KOAM-TV and is currently posted on KGCS’s YouTube channel, “KGCS Missouri Southern.”

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 22. It is also available on regional cable television systems such as Cable One, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.
