Diamond trucker killed, two injured in fiery four-vehicle crash on I-44

A Diamond man was killed in a four-vehicle accident 7 p.m. Thursday on I-44, three-quarters of a mile east of Duenweg.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2006 International tractor-trailer unit driven by Robert G. Horton, 47, Diamond, struck the median cable, caught fire and crossed the median into eastbound traffic.

The Horton vehicle struck the towed unit of a 2012 Freightliner driven by Ernesto A. Aguayochavez, 48, Corona, California, causing the rear axles of the towed unit to hit a 2012 Hyundai driven by Metasha M. Olson, 46, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The Horton vehicle then struck a 2018 Dodge Ram driven by James T. Barnes, 33, Tecumseh, Oklahoma.







Jasper County Chief Coroner George Woodward pronounced Horton dead at the scene at 7:09 p.m.

Aguayochavez and Olson were treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

The fatality was the 43rd this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
