A wide range of artwork created in different media will be the focus of “End of Our Lease,” an exhibit by six Missouri Southern State University seniors that will open Monday, Dec. 2, in Spiva Art Gallery.
A reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6.
The exhibit is aptly named, as it will showcase the students’ work before their anticipated graduation.
Marilyn Alvarez is a graphic design major who has explored how design can be used for social change. She’s created an ad campaign which focuses on immigration detention centers and forced family separation. She incorporates her designs on multiple platforms in hopes to raise awareness to the issue. Her overall goal is to be able to help her community by having merchandise for sale. All proceeds will go to a family currently being affected by the separation policy.
Madelyn Gale’s uses a variety of media to explore the effects of the subconscious through images of the human body. Her work investigates the space between consciousness and unconsciousness. She will graduate with a degree in art education (K-12) in the spring of 2020 after she concludes her professional semester with Bentonville Public Schools.
Matthew Harris’ exhibition features a collection of prints and custom designed wallpaper. With training in graphic design and printmaking, he focuses on mass-produced imagery for the masses. Inspired by the work of Charles and Ray Eames and Andy Warhol, his work challenges the idea of how art is created only for galleries and the artistic elite.
Carla Rea’s exhibition is based around the exploration of emotion because of change. She studied art and photography for two years in Sweden before returning to her hometown of Lamar, Mo. The experimental artwork mixes motion and light to create a dreamy and ethereal impression while she embraces the acceptance of growth and identity through photography.
Amber Wagner is a double major in art and education and will exhibit two shows rather than one. The first exhibition explores oceanic themes. The second features her experience in Spain. She will student teach in the spring of 2020 and plans to graduate in May.
Hampton Yust explores the functionality of graphic design and how strong branding could be used to promote professionalism and authenticity within the music industry. Behind every successful musician is a successful branding campaign. His show consists of several branding techniques which musicians employ to promote their brand.
