Webb City man arrested after allegedly robbing Joplin Fastrip store with machete

On July 5, 2021 at 12:44 am the Joplin Police Department Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call for a report of an armed robbery that just occurred at the Gulf Oil/Fastrip Convenience Store at 5501 E. 32nd Street. 

It was reported that a white male had entered the business with a machete, pointed it at the clerk and demanded the contents of the cash register. 









After taking an undisclosed amount of money the suspect fled the store. No employees or customers were injured during the robbery. 

After reviewing surveillance video of the incident, an officer with the Joplin Police Department recognized and identified the suspect as Joshua V. Ortiz, age 20, of Webb City. 

On July 5th at 4:56 pm Ortiz voluntarily turned himself in to Joplin Police. 

Ortiz was placed under arrest and charges are being sought for Robbery in the 1st Degree and Armed Criminal Action.
