Ceremonies to honor Southern students for academic success, skills

(From Southern News Service)

Three upcoming ceremonies will honor Missouri Southern State University students for their academic success as well as service to their community and professional leadership skills.

· The 37th annual Honors Convocation ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mills Anderson Criminal Justice Building.

A total of 161 students will be honored during the event. It will include the Spencer-Bartlett Respect Award and the announcement of this year’s Outstanding Graduate, as well as recognition of the Outstanding Student recipients as nominated by university faculty members, graduates of the Honors Program and those inducted into the Missouri Iota chapter of Alpha Chi.

· The 23rd annual Glenn Dolence Leadership and Service Awards ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24, in Billingsly Student Center’s Phelps Theatre.

The criteria for nominations state that recipients must be a graduating senior (in December 2013, or May or July 2014) with a completion of 90 hours at Missouri Southern and significant leadership/service contributions to the university. The main purpose of the award is to formally recognize senior students who have made a difference in campus organizations, student employment, student services or athletics.

· Ten students will be inducted into the Spring 2014 Super Leader Program at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in Phelps Theatre.

The Super Leader Program is a joint effort between Missouri Southern State University and the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Network to identify, cultivate and motivate future community leaders currently enrolled in college. All students participating in the program went through an application and interview process in addition to committing to meeting every other Friday throughout the semester.

Upon completion of the Super Leaders program, students receive a one-year complimentary Young Professionals Network membership to help them continue with professional networking.
