MSSU to hold tribute dinner for Julio and Vivian Leon Saturday

(From Southern News Service)

Former Missouri Southern State University President Dr. Julio León and his wife, Vivian, will be honored during a tribute dinner on Saturday, April 26, in the Connor Ballroom of Billingsly Student Center.
The by-invitation event will begin with a social hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and a program at 7:30 p.m.
During the program, a special announcement will be made regarding the naming of the Health Sciences Building, which is being dedicated to León.
“This dinner is a chance for us to honor the Leóns, who were such a vital part of this university’s growth and success during their years here,” said Interim President Dr. Alan Marble. “Given the long effort to bring the project to fruition, it’s only fitting that the Health Sciences Building be dedicated in his honor.”
Having served previously as a faculty member in the Business Department and later as its dean, León was named president of the college in 1982. He served for 25 years before resigning in 2007.
León is currently the special adviser to the executive vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas System, in charge of creating a new university and a medical school in South Texas. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will open in August 2015.
“More than anything, I’m looking forward to seeing and visiting with old friends,” said León of his return to campus on Saturday. “For 38 years I worked at the institution and was able to see the dedication of the faculty, staff, regents and governors. To see so many of them again after so many years is exciting for us.”
