In case you ever wanted to be a temporary assistant Joplin city attorney

For those who are interested, these are the qualfications the city of Joplin is looking for in a temporary assistant city attorney:

Temporary Assistant City Attorney Legal

Definition: Under limited direction, provides legal counsel and representation to the management, staff, and officials of the City of Joplin and/or prosecutes cases on behalf of the City of Joplin in Joplin Municipal Court.

Essential Functions: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

Tasks:
Provides legal advice and interpretations of laws/statutes to the City Council, City Manager, Mayor, Department heads, Boards, and Commissions, including reviewing and evaluating and recommending approval/modification of legal documents such as contracts, deeds, and bonds; drafts and interprets City Ordinances; reviews, evaluates, and oversees disposition of all claims against the City; represents the City in court/administrative proceedings. May serve as the City Attorney in the absence of the City Attorney, including attendance at City Council meetings.

Reviews cases involving violation of City Code and signs charges when case is prosecutable; prepares cases for prosecution in Joplin Municipal Court; meets with defense attorneys to discuss appropriate resolution of cases (plea bargain or court trial); interviews witnesses, including arresting officer, to prepare effective prosecution case; prosecutes City Code violations in Court; answers questions from the public regarding City Code.

Knowledges, Skills, and Other Characteristics:
Knowledge of Missouri statutes impacting municipalities.
Knowledge of the City of Joplin Code.
Knowledge of the practices, procedures, and techniques for effectively prosecuting violations of City Code in Municipal Court.
Knowledge of legal reference resources and research techniques used to prepare and present an effective prosecution of City Code violations in Municipal Court.


Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City Council members, other Department heads, defense attorneys, and the public.
Skill in both oral and written communication and media relations.
Skill in interpreting State and Federal laws, rules, and regulations impacting municipal governments in the State of Missouri.
Skill in interpreting City Ordinances, rules, and regulations.


Physical Requirements:

Requires high levels of sitting and standing; manual dexterity sufficient to operate essential job function equipment such as computers, typewriters, copiers, FAX machines, and telephones; may require hearing and sightedness with color and depth perception; must be sighted, hearing, and mobile to such a degree as not to compromise safety rules or the safety of self or others while working.

Qualifications: Must possess a license to practice law in the State of Missouri. It is recommended that the attorney have been practicing for at least three (3) years.

Salary: Salary range is $48,618 - $73,283, with excellent benefits
