The Southern Jazz Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium on the campus of Missouri Southern State University.
The concert will feature a variety of big band numbers including “Easy Money” and “Vine Street Rumble” by the Count Basie Orchestra and “Oye Coma Va” by Tito Puente. Vocalist Devri Brock will perform “I Remember You,” “Blue Skies” and “Black Coffee.”
The jazz orchestra – under the direction of Dr. Phillip C. Wise, director of jazz studies – will be joined by professional jazz saxophonist Wesley Smith, of Branson, Mo.
A native of Joplin, Smith graduated from Missouri Southern with a bachelor’s degree in music performance. He has shared the stage with artists such as the Osmonds, Debbie Boone, the Manhattan Transfer, Ray Stevens, the Lennon Sisters, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ben E. King and Marvin Hamlisch, a recipient of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.
He currently performs as a woodwind player on the Branson Belle.
The concert is free and open to the public.
