Flamenco troupe to offer performance, master class

(From Southern News Service)

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, the nation’s premiere Spanish and flamenco dance company, will appear at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Taylor Performing Arts Center at Missouri Southern State University.

The group’s presentation, “Poema de Andalucia,” is free and open to the public.

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is known for the purity of its work and the unique way in which it enriches the art of flamenco. Flamenco Vivo actively encourages the creativity and innovation of young artists from both Spain and the U.S. while remaining faithful to its powerful traditions. True to its founding vision, the company commissions new repertoire with original choreography and music and has premiered a series of dramatic, cutting-edge works.

Flamenco Vivo was founded in 1983 by Roberto Lorca and Carlota Santana. Since Mr. Lorca’s untimely death in 1987, the Company has continued to grow and flourish under Ms. Santana’s direction, performing at such venues as the Lincoln Center, The Joyce Theater, The New Victory Theater, Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art.

In advance of the performance, a special “master class” will be offered at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in Taylor Performing Arts Center.

The class, provided by the Flamenco Vivo group, will introduce the basic movements of flamenco dancing.

This 75-minute session will increase participants’ awareness and understanding of the dance and its cultural heritage. It includes a brief history of the origins of flamenco dance, music and song and how the various cultures that inhabited Spain have influenced it. This is a hands-on workshop with instruction in rhythmic handclaps (palmas), arm movements (braceo), body posturing and footwork (taconeo). The class is supportive and fun, and flamenco technique is woven into a short choreography.

By the end of the class, participants will be able to “perform” a simple choreographed dance.

The class is free and open to the public.
