More than 300 area high-school students will attend the 19th annual Southern Media Showcase Day on Thursday, Dec. 3, at Missouri Southern State University.
The event will begin at 9:15 a.m. in Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium. Two Missouri Southern graduates will offer presentations – Alonzo Medcalf, a still photographer with KMOV-TV in St. Louis, and Noppadol Paothong, a still photographer working for the Missouri Department of Conservation.
More than 400 entries from students at 12 schools were received for the annual competition. Video and print categories will include writing, photography, design, music videos, news and sports. Students will view finalist entries before the awards presentation. Lunch will be provided in Connor Ballroom in Billingsly Student Center.
Schools sending students to the event include Joplin, Webb City, Southeast (Kansas), Springfield Catholic Schools, Columbus (Kansas), Lamar, Glendale (Springfield), Cassville, McAuley, Sarcoxie and Carthage.
The program is made possible in a large part by a grant received from the Ruth I. Koplin Foundation, as well as other financial supporters such as the Missouri Broadcasters Association and the Missouri Press Association. KOAM-TV plans to donate giveaway items for the students. On-campus support includes the Admissions office and Communication Department media outlets – KGCS, KXMS, Vivid and the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
