Joplin man cited for felony assault, endangering a child after second DWI in a week

A Joplin man was cited for driving while intoxicated, felony assault and endangering the welfare of a child following a one-vehicle accident in which he and a 12-year-old child were injured 3:30 p.m. today on Highway NN, six miles south of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1989 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Russell I. Fitzsimmons, 37, Joplin, ran off the roadway and overturned.

Fitzsimmons and a passenger, James B. Lawson, 12, Joplin, were treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Fitzsimmons was also charged with careless and imprudent driving, failure to register a motor vehicle, and for not having any insurance.

The DWI arrest was the second in the past week for Fitzsimmons.
