Joplin Insider to focus on recycling options

In the next program of Joplin Insider, viewers will learn more about recycling and the various collection options offered through the City, Joplin Workshops, and Republic Services.

Guests MaryAnne Phillips, Joplin Recycling Coordinator, and Susan Adams, Executive Director for the Joplin Workshops, visit with Public Information Officer Lynn Onstot about the changes in recycling and the resources available to the public.

Each organization offers recycling to different audiences with various alternatives. The Joplin Recycling Center has experienced a 150% growth since opening in January 2000. Initially, the Center accepted only basic recyclables, such as tin/aluminum cans, plastic/glass bottles, newspapers, cardboard and office paper/magazines. As the Center matured, packing materials, telephone directories, batteries, metal scrap, household hazardous waste, plastic shopping bags, electronics and cooking oil were added to recyclables mix. Today the Center has expanded further, offering general collections of recyclable items, as well as specific needs such as paper shredding and household hazardous materials disposal.

Joplin Workshops offers recycling by providing a drop off location near their facility at 5th and School Streets. They also provide a pick-up service at no cost for small businesses that recycle items, otherwise referred to as commercial curbside recycling. Republic Services, the City’s residential trash collector, offers curbside recycling to citizens for $4.75 per month.

This episode of Joplin Insider, the City’s 30-minute interview television show, will air several times throughout March including:
